The ARCH Research Project

“ARCH-Archival Research and Cultural Heritage: The Theatre Archive of Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio” is a research project which runs in Italy, Greece and other European countries. It aims to conduct primary research in the field of theatre genetics and cultural documentation, focusing on the artistic work of the Italian theatre company Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio.

The ARCH project emerged in three phases. The first of these was “Archivio”, a two-year initiative under Dr Eleni Papalexiou and Dr Avra Xepapadakou, made possible by the endorsement and financial resources of the University of Crete, and supported by a team of undergraduate students in theatre studies. In the first months of 2012 this small research team began their collaboration with Claudia Castellucci and the other members of the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio. Eleni Papalexiou is a lecturer at the Department of Theatre Studies, School of Fine Arts, University of the Peloponnese (Nafplion), where she teaches contemporary theatre, theatre theory and performance analysis. She holds a Ph.D. in contemporary approaches of Greek tragedy from the Université Sorbonne Paris IV.

She is the author of a monograph entitled When the words turn into matter on the theatre of Romeo Castellucci and the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio (Athens: Plethron, 2009) and she has published several articles on relevant topics, such as: « Nyx Teleia. Nella notte profonda del mondo greco antico », in Toccare il reale. L’arte di Romeo Castellucci, Napoli: Cronopio, 2015; « The Dramaturgies of the Gaze: Strategies of Vision and Optical Revelations in the Theatre of Romeo Castellucci and the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio », in Theatre as Voyeurism. The Pleasures of Watching, London: Palgrave-Macmillan, 2015, and « Le corps comme matière dramatique dans le théâtre de Romeo Castellucci », Utopie et pensée critique dans le processus de création, Besançon : Les Solitaires Intempestifs, 2012.

She was the main researcher of the research project “Archivio” (2012-2013) and is currently a member of the main research team of the European project “Arch: Archival Research and Cultural Heritage-Aristeia II” (2014-today), both concerning the theatre archive of Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio.

As a Fulbright visiting scholar she conducted research at Stanford University (Department of Classics & Department of Theater and Performance Studies, 2014-2015).
