Archival Records as Artistic Vehicles of Communication

by Dr Charles J. Farrugia, Malta’s National Archivist

Picture: Alex Attard

Malta is rich in archival heritage.  Records dating as back as 1107 are found in a number of archival repositories on the islands.  The large amounts of records, and often the lack of interest by the public and administrators alike led to neglect in years gone by.  The last two decades witnessed a revival in interest in archival holdings in Malta and the main repositories are working hard to accession records, conserve them in the best way and render them accessible to the public for research. Noblemen who fell into serfdom

by Reet Hünerson, specialist at the National Archives of Estonia

While collecting data for the database “Land registers” at http://www.ra.ee/apps/kinnistud/, I have sometimes come across rather unexpected stories.

Two decades before the Great Northern War, the Swedish King Charles XI initiated the Great Reduction of manors in the overseas provinces of Estland and Livland. About 80 per cent of all noble holdings in Livland and c. 50 per cent in Estland went into the crown possession. The war ravaged the provinces in 1700-1710 and the plague also took its toll. The human loss was huge, villages were suffering population decline or even became empty. Several manors were also damaged or desolated and their owners had either died or fled the country. Some parishes had no pastors who would have recorded the deaths of parish members in the registers. As a result of the war, Sweden lost Estland and Livland to Russia and the Russian Tsar Peter I restored landholding rights that had existed before the reforms of Chrales XI of Sweden. In the “unsettled times” after the war, hunt for ownerless landed properties started. In such a situation, minor heirs could even lose their noble title as well as their title to land, as the case of the descendants of Rittmeister and Baron (Freiherr) Heinrich Homburg shows. The building of National Archives of Roumania, a view from Cismigiu Park (Garden).

Last year the National Archives of Romania celebrated its187 years of existence. This makes the National Archives of Romania the oldest institution of the Romanian modern governance. Although we have a long history, we are nonetheless living in the present and, most of all, we are hardly trying to ensure a better future for our institution and profession. How the manorial lords wrecked ships

by Kersti Lust, PhD in history, National Archives of Estonia

Map of Hiiumaa, 1704. RA, EAA.308.2.28

Wrecking, the illegal seizure of materials and cargo of shipwrecks, was an important economic activity for several centuries, and it was performed along many coastal areas around the world. The international scholarly tradition usually views wrecking as an activity of the common people, but this blog post sheds light on the deceptive and opportunistic activities of manorial lords, who were responsible for enforcing the law at the local level by performing police and court functions, but who, at the same time, could benefit also from wrecking. International Council On Archives – Blue Shield International

by Deborah Jenkins, Chair of the European Region, International Council on Archives

Malaga 14 November 2018

The idea that the international community has a role to play in rescuing and defending archives as cultural artefacts is a long standing one. The Blue Shield symbol, for instance, goes back to the 1954 Hague Convention. However, it is only in 1996 that Blue Shield International was founded (originally as the International Committee of the Blue Shield) by four international heritage bodies including the International Council on Archives. Their object was to take action in respect of archives and other heritage assets at risk as a consequence of conflict and, more recently, natural disasters including climate change. Polish President Andrzej Duda’s visit to the National Archives of Estonia and Polish-Estonian archival cooperation

by Birgit Kibal, Adviser of the National Archivist

22 June 2018 is an important landmark in the archival cooperation between Poland and Estonia. That day Polish President Andrzej Duda visited the main building of the National Archives to open an exhibition of archival records about the historical relationships between Estonia and Poland. President Duda is the first foreign head of state to visit archives in Estonia since the creation of national archival system almost a hundred years ago and it is a great honour and respect to our archival institutions. by Deborah Jenkins, Chair of the European Region, International Council on Archives

Girona 9 October 2018

It is a commonplace of archive management that the structure of an organisation shapes the records it generates. The work of a Section within the International Council on Archives: the example of the Section for Archives of Literature and Art (SLA)

by David Sutton,  International Council on Archives (ICA)

Introduction: one Section among twelve
SLA is one of a varied group of Sections which operate within ICA. The twelve Sections reflect the fact that in many languages there are two meanings for the word “archives” – archives as documents, and archives as institutions. Some ICA Sections are based around archives as institutions – for example, the Section of International Organisations (SIO), the Section on University Archives (SUV) and the Section of Local, Municipal and Territorial Archives (SLMT). Other Sections are based around archives as subject-based documents – for example, the Section on Sports Archives (SPO), the Section on Architectural Archives (SAR), the Section for Archives of Faith Traditions (SAFT), and our Section for Archives of Literature and Art (SLA). A few Sections may be said to combine both meanings – for example, the Section on Business Archives (SBA) and the Section for Archives of Parliaments and Political Parties (SPP).  The work of a Section within the International Council on Archives: the example of the Section for Archives of Literature and Art (SLA) weiterlesen

The care and management of Sport archives

by Deborah Jenkins,  Chair of the European Region, International Council on Archives

Although sport is one of the great binding human preoccupations around the world, the care and management of Sport archives has not been given a prominent place in archival debate. From country to country, from sport to sport, different provision has been made for the documentation generated by sporting associations and clubs. When London was chosen for the Olympic games of 2012, London Metropolitan Archives undertook research on what had happened to the papers of the Mexico, Barcelona, Sydney and many other games – the findings of the research was that a patchwork of different approaches currently existed. EGSAH-ICA Survey on displaced archives

by  Vlatka Lemić

The Expert Group on Shared Archival Heritage was established in September 2016 with goal to discus and research issues related to archives pertaining to the history and cultural heritage of more than one community, country or region where the custody, ownership and access is unclear or in dispute.

The work of EGSAH includes the creation of tools and resources to assist ICA members in identifying and acknowledging records of shared archival heritage, the provision of guidance on developing and models of agreements and systems to allow access by all stakeholders in such archives and the establishment of codes and standards of professional conduct to protect themselves and ensure that the archives are appropriately managed.
